A Social Security public affairs specialist representing Michigan has issued a message that could be valuable in the years ahead to anyone seeking retirement, survivors' or disability benefits: Don't forget to update Social Security records anytime a life change creates a name change.

With the income tax season upon us and planning for spring and summer weddings in full gear, the Social Security Administration said communication with the agency is essential.

For the newlywed females who intend to use only their maiden name and not take a husband's last name, there is no need to change personal information on file with the SSA. However, for those who do adopt their husbands' surnames, or add it to their maiden name by hyphenating, it is essential to contact the agency, the official said. Also, if divorce leads to retaking a maiden name, that should also be recorded.

This is necessary because recording the name change will allow Social Security to make sure people are credited for all of their earnings under all names used in the workplace. Down the road, the lack of discrepancies will help filing claims for Social Security disability or other benefits go more smoothly. When it comes to tax time, the official said, the records of SSA and the Internal Revenue Service should match. If they don't, there could be a lag in receiving tax refunds.

Also, the official reminded citizens that making such changes is easy by going to the SSA website or calling its toll-free number for instructions. People do not need to hire a service advertising that it will fill out the forms at a cost, she said.

Obtaining Social Security disability benefits can be difficult enough, with many applicants having to wait months or even more than a year to begin receiving their benefits. Following this simple advice could help eliminate one roadblock.
